Unhappy Noisy drive shaft or Gearbox???

Let me put you in hte picture. S60 T5 YR2000 manual trans..
I had a noise from the front end, which i finally found out to be strut cap. But anyway i changed the suspension arms and damaged the passenger (short) driveshaft.
I went to a volvo breakers and got another one. After i put this on i notice a small wining noise from the front on acceleration. Did not do it when clutch was pressed or in reverse.
I left it a while and it went for a few days, now its noisy as hell, souds like a tractor pulsating. So i took it back to the the breakers and they got it up on a ramp whilst and drove the wheels. They said the gearbox is vibrating and its the differential. It did sound as if it was coming from there. He said that we he turned one wheel by hand the other should move, i never!!!
I asked him to change the driveshaft and it still done the same. I dont know if he put a similar broken driveshaft in that he had, i dont know, it sounded suspect.
So now he says i need another gearbox which he will fit for £400.
Does this sound as if the gearbox has gone as it only done this once the driveshaft was changed...... please help
