Default Gearstick Knocking

A bit of a odd one, and I’m interested to hear if anyone has experienced this or knows what it might be.

There’s a knock comes from the gearstick area (and you can feel it when holding the stick) and it happens when slowing through 10mph, and always at exactly 10mph. It happens both when slowing in gear or when coasting out of gear (so doesn’t seem to be related to revs). It only happens if I’ve gone above approx 30mph, and not if I’ve gone up to 20mph and back down (for example). It happens whether I brake through 10mph or not. It’s a light knock, but makes me think something is loose. It started about two weeks ago and has definitely got slightly louder. All a bit weird.

My V60 (D3 2012) has 40k miles.

Vacuum engine mount maybe?

A few more experiments and:
1. It doesn’t ever happen when in in 5th or 6th, so only happens in neutral or 1/2/3/4 with/without clutch depressed.
2. It happens when getting to 20mph from standstill without putting into gear (just coasting down hill) then slowing through 10mph.

Mine does this too, almost a click from somewhere but you can feel it via the gear lever(2013 D4 19k)

I can't believe the low mileage of both your cars. I do 19k per year

First owner had my car for two years - did 30k.
Then second owner just over 2k per year since!!
I’ve had it a couple of months but still only gonna do 5k max.

Tonyvid - have you ever had it checked out? When did it start and has it got louder?

Mines going to dealer in a couple of weeks as thankfully under Selekt warranty still.

I bought it privately in August with 14k from an elderly driver, doing my best to make it up now! It was like a new car inside 😁

I’ve not had the slight clunk checked as it seems to be at the 10mph step, I’m assuming something is automatically happening so it will be interesting to see the outcome of your dealer visit. Everything else feels tight as a drum and nothing under acceleration so I don’t think something has come loose etc.

I'd be interested to hear how this pans out, my last car had a similar noise/feeling (VW Scirocco) and my VW indy couldn't find a problem. I hope yours is repeatable as these issues tend to be a nightmare to get fixed under warranty, in my experience.

Ok so back from Volvo, problem identified but not fixed as part to be ordered from Sweden. A faulty/sticking reversing solenoid. Will further update in the new year when the car is back in and the replacement solenoid fitted!

Hopefully this will cure the noise you've mentioned.
