Default XC60 Pulling to one side after front tyre change

Hi All

Can I have your thoughts please

I noticed my front tyres wearing unevenly on the side about 6 months ago. I had them aligned at Volvo and they said there was still some wear left in the tyres. Yesterday I eventually had one of the fronts changed but the other front still looked ok. However the car now pulls heavily to the right when accelerating. I think it’s called torque steer

National Tyres now think I need both fronts changing which I’m reluctant to do as the other front still has lots of mileage left in it. However if it solves the problem of the torque steer I will obviously get it changed

Anybody had similar experiences of this?

Thanks

R

Personally for me I would never put just one new tyre on the front
Whatever the cost I would need to fit a pair
Keep the part one one for the rear or as a spare if needed

There is a view that if new tyres are needed on the front axle, then the new tyres should be fitted to the rear axle and the existing rear tyres should be swapped to the front.

Indeed. If only fitting a pair, Costco will only fit the new ones to the rear; based on industry advice. If you want them on the front they will refuse to fit them at all.

I'm disappointed that any tyre company would agree to fit an odd tyre to the front. Madness!

If you really must be a cheapskate then at least have the rear pair swapped with the front (assuming the rear is actually a matching pair). But that's hardly ideal.

I had problems with swapping tyres from one set of rims to another, it appears that a tyres may have got swapped from inside to outside, many tyres are bidirectional and have no markings. This caused a bad pull in the steering.

The red and yellow lines (sprayed on in manufacture) say which way round to fit them, but they were no longer visible once worn off.

Probably not the issue here, however, the advice about fitting tyres to the back then moving them to the front is sound and should be followed.

My local tyre place Ashton Tyres are brilliant and always offer to swap them round as good practice dictates.

Firstly - if you have tyres where some are substantially better than others then the better ones should go to the rear - this is documented in your owners manual.

Secondly - the FWD XC60 is prone to torque steer, you will always have problems if you have un-matched front tyres. You should try driving one with the space saver spare wheel fitted........ :-( Your cheapest fix is swap the 2 fronts for the 2 rears (assuming they are matched).

Agreed, change as an axle pair every time the same as you would with pads.
Lets face it a pair is only going to cost 3 tanks of fuel and last 30K.

Madness not to change both front tyres at the same time.

Will certainly make a great car almost indriveable.
