Smile Headlamps .. H7 halogen to LED .. anyone tried?

Interested to know if anyone has tried swapping the standard halogen bulbs for led H7 s ., ive been using nightbreakers for years but led's have come on a long way, i wonder if the beam pattern is affected, and also how hot they run & any issues with bulb failure messages due to lower current being drawn.. thoughts anyone?

May I be the first to say that would be illegal to do so.

The MoT testing manual was also updated in 2021, telling testers: “Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp [the car will fail its MoT as a result].”

Unless you are using your vehicle exclusively off road then i'm afraid it is a no-no.

over on the mini forum it has been pointed out that the rule is now amended to excuse (allow) cars pre '82 (or something like that) so they can put LED's in

but no for us 'normal' car owners (even my mini which is an 88 grrr) it is verboten

The issue is the reflectors are designed to work with the light source in very particular place to create the correct beam pattern.

A number of people have tried it on the Mk 1 XC90 sub forum, P3 and S40/V50 and the overwhelming conclusion is it doesn't work - the beam pattern is hopeless - whether that be retrofitting LED into a reflector (P2 cars and some P3) or projector (S40/V50).

And as has been said, it's an MOT fail.

It's pre 1986 cars I think. Really not sure why... pre 1982 cars don't need an MOT anyway.
