Never soak anything electrical, I'm sure Joe just means to hit it with some cleaner rather than bathe it in it.

Well yes some disassembly required lol I don't think anyone was advocating blindly spraying it in through gaps or anything

If there was contact grease found inside replace as found in fairness I hadn't considered that good point

Its not a big job to remove the switch from the car and disassemble it clean all the contacts and reassemble with new grease, I have done it several time on my own car .

I would not recommend using a power tool to clean the pcb simple contact cleaner will remove most of the dirt and old grease and a simple clean with a pence rubber will remove any stubbed dirt.
The contact cleaner I use in my work leaves a lubricating film on the contacts. Some folk use IPA which as you warn, just strips any lubricant away.

Thanks very much everyone. I got a new indicator stalk from a scrap dealer and everything is now fine. So that was the problem.
