Default C70 boot separator falls down

Usually, the boot separator stays in position, when raised. However, recently it has started to fall down easily when raised.

Is the cure simply to replace the hydraulic struts?

These seem quite expensive. Is there a cheap workaround, as the car is 16 years old? I suppose that simply driving around with it down, rather than up, is the simplest ...

If you mean the gas struts, IMHO replacement is likely the only option. Look for a part number and maybe try e-bay or a breakers ?
