Big call...repair or not V70R 1998 - Page 2

Thanks for all the advice and comments guys, hugely appreciated.

I'm definitely going to keep the car and get it repaired. My Volvo mechanic is convinced it's the turbo but I'm favouring stem seals. It's in the garage as we speak having a T5 turbo fitted (in the numbers match) to see if that stops the smoking. I'm also going to get my turbo recon'd because at 196k it's gotta be feeling the strain a bit.

Forte additive will also be tried with an oil flush out and change. I'll keep you posted.

Turbo not the culprit so looking at stem seals or piston rings... Oil flush and change with Forte additive next then either repair or possibly new engine?

Piston ring check was no throttle down a hill and at the bottom full throttle and see if it smokes?
Also excessive crank case pressure and spitting oil out of the oil filler while running.
Only car I had with hard stem seals only smoked when cold started and they sealed up when hot.
I haven't heard many people have ring failure on Volvos but I have heard of cylinder head problems at late 100k early 200k.

Heard mixed reviews on Forte additive and I fall into the camp that would advice against its use unless you're looking to hide the symptoms and flog the car. If you're keeping then better to fix the problem at source, and use oil with no additive as per the manufacturers specification.
