My last tank during the recent cold snap, which included several short journeys up hills, resulted in 42.5 mpg at the pumps, and that was by far the lowest I've had. The tank before that was 52.5 mpg. I think the temperature does play a part, but I should double check my tyre pressures really.

Yesterday I reset the trip computer thing with the bar chart whilst cruising along a dual carriageway at about 65mph and it showed 67mpg over several miles. That was followed by a a section broken up by three roundabouts and using full acceleration out of them (just to see what would happen to my mpg) and that brought the average down to about 52mpg. However, on other occasions going along the dual carriageway for 50-60 miles at 70mph it has only shown 48/49mpg

Check out this graph for my fuelly account to see what effect the time of year has on my fuel economy in a 2 litre 140 bhp diesel A4 :

http://www.fuelly.com/car/audi/a4/20...1271/fuelchart

I am hoping that my forthcoming V60 D4 manual will achieve around 60 mpg in the summer and stay above 50 mpg in the winter. My commute is a 70 mile round trip on mostly dual carriageway and I don't do many short journeys. Andymcp's fuelly data suggests I should be able to achieve what I want to (fingers crossed!)

I think that is achievable. My other problem is that I quite like exploiting the engines power and torque from time to time, which does affect fuel consumption. Honest John ran an S60 and his average fuel consumption was pretty respectable, about 60 mpg.

V60 D4 Business Edition. 2000 miles from new (5 weeks old) average mpg = 48. Not sparing it but not being daft either. Loads of power for safe overtaking. Great engine.

I've had a couple of tankfuls when 80% of the driving has been motorway / open road / long trip. These have worked out at about 52 - 54mpg measured brim to brim.

However, I do cruise on m-ways at 80+mph, and exploit the car's overtaking punch (there's a LOT of it!).

You might get close to 60mpg in warmer weather, but remember the car has 181bhp and weighs 1700kg ....

Up to 20% less from comparative figures I've seen.

What is a shock to me is how much a reduction in mpg is caused by the DPF's.

My V70 D5 163 bhp Euro 3 Geartronic regularly returns 63 mpg.

Thanks for the info. Are you manual or auto?

Cruising speed can have a massive effect on economy. I read somewhere that this engine/gearbox seems to be tuned for best economy around 70 mph and I normally cruise at 71-72. 52-54 mpg at 80+ is actually might impressive!

I love the look of the car inside and out, but the combination of performance and economy was definitely the deal maker. Without this engine I (and I'm guessing many others) would not have placed an order - an investment well spent by our Swedish (or is that Chinese?) friends!

To go slightly off-topic, but picking up on above comments.........

As well as being unimpressed with the econonmy, I'm slightly underwhelmed by the performance.

Doesn't seem to have much ooomph in the mid-range. I came from a 2.0tdi 168bhp A3, and was expecting it ( based on Volvo's 0-60 which is less, plus the higher bhp ) to feel faster, but it definitely feels slower.

It's maybe just the gearing, but finding I have to drop it at least 1 if not 2 gears for an overtake, when I could have got away with leaving in the same gear in the A3 in the comparable situation.

If I remember correctly there is an eco setting that reduces the performance. Could it be set on that?

Don't forget that diesels take time to loosen up and attain their full economy potential. My V70 D3 136bhp auto started at 39.9mpg when brand new. It has steadily risen and now sits at 47.1mpg at 33k. All my previous diesels have got better with time and miles, particularly after 50k ish, when they all appeared to "calm down" a bit.
