Broken down...... again
Hi all,
Another day, another problem. Had to visit a customer at work today so drove it 140 miles to a customer with a work colleague and it was fine except I felt a slight stutter at some traffic lights, pulled away and did the rest of the journey fine. Came home again just fine without any issues. 6 hours driving and apart from that one stutter, no issues. Went to take the girlfriend to netball this evening and it stuttered at some traffic lights, stalled and wouldn't idle again after starting, left broken down waiting for the RAC again. Was only 5 minutes from home so got VIDA and did a code scan. I assumed it was fuel related but the codes are a bit vague... Anyone any ideas? Many thanks

I would say either Fuel Pressure Sensor on end of the fuel rail or Problem with fuel pump.

TBH I doubt its FPS - it would be cheapest fix but I dont think it would actually trigger Pump control module fault.
1) check CEM obviously - fuses etc, no water ingress? possibly there is some communication missing there to/from pump module 2) check actual PEM (would be under your rear seat, unless you have it pre-recalled like our US friends, under the car, rusting away). I had an issue with PEM cabling earlier on - thats the wiring coming out from PEM going down to fuel pump. In my case - it was broken cable at the pump's end. BUT in my case I got a lot to different warnings, like low fuel pressure, misfire at cylinders etc. So not 100% sure your case may be similar 3) worst case it may be actual fuel pump itself - those rarely go off and I would seriously doubt it would just die immediately (mine was indicating CEL for like 2 years) but its not unheard of. If thats the case, be prepared for a pricey job as you can only access it by removing fuel tank. Whats the current state of the car - does it crank but not starting or feels like it tries to start but fails ?

I just heard from Volvo, looks like it was the fuse, RAC chap was hopeless, didn't even check that. In hindsight I should have known to check myself but was knackered after spending all day in the thing.
Fuses blow for a reason so I'm now wondering what caused it to go. Volvo don't want to investigate as it's going to be a lengthy procedure to get to fuel pump and check all the wires etc so have been told to see how it goes with some spare fuses in the glovebox. Hopefully just a bad fuse, I was told it looked old and worn but I'm getting ready for a pump replacement in the near future as I don't think this is the end of this issue.

Well, good thing it was the fuse - cheapest option possible but as you said - may indicate something going on. Ask them if that was the fuel-pump fuse #74 or something different and what fuse was there. 15A is what you should have, maybe someone used smaller one instead?

How's it going now? Any further clues about the cause?
My V50 was stuttering. It was a worn accelerator pedal sensor and housing. Which error code reader do you use? Mine was software for a laptop off eBay but it didn't read the codes, waste of money. |

So far so good, it's been nearly a week and no issues yet. I've got a bunch of spare fuses just in case though, fingers crossed I won't need them. Software is Volvo's VIDA on an old laptop I had floating about and a Volvo DICE unit off ebay.
