480 es slugish when cold
hi i have 92k plate 480 es, when the car is cold its very slugish and the engine has no pull, also when it becomes warm the cat rattels and tickover is anywhere between 700 and 1000 rpm. it passed mot ok and info centre tells me im still getting 35+ mpg most of the time. anyone any ideas?

May or may not be the same but I had a Cavalier a while a go with similar problem when cold but ran fine when warmed up, it turned out to be the back box on the exhaust! The baffles inside had rotted and was blocking gasses a bit but it looked ok from the outside. Replaced it with a new one and problem solved. Give the back box a shake to see if you can hear anything. Just a suggestion like I say but that was the problem with that car.

Could be the ECU has gone into "limp mode" as something else has failed. I hate to send you elsewhere but you may find more answers here: http://volvo480.dragons.org.uk/forum/index.php
Do a search and you may find the answer without having to post maybe? It's a good forum (just like this one) But just for 480's. Hope this helps. |

have you checked the spark plug leads? If not, park up somewhere dark, lift the bonnet and look for "leaking" sparks, should be pretty obvious. Just one of many possibilities

same problem
My 440 2.0 is currently suffering a similar thing. It pulls ok when cold but when it gets to around 3500rpm the engine gives up all power then I get BIG dollops of power if I keep trying to accelerate. Once above 4500rpm it all goes back to normal.

Re:
It could be the fuellines wich has clogged..it could be the airfilter, on my 850 glt a rat had build a nest inside my airbox...so it had absolutely no power at high revs..sounds weird and i got my self a real surprise when i was going to clean my filter

it seems that after all it was a blocked cat, had the insides of cat knocked out and it goes like stink again.
