Default V50 engine

Hi guys,
I have just joined your site as I am currently looking to purchase a Volvo V50 Diesel estate, I have been told by a mechanic that they are great cars, but avoid the model that has the Peugeot Diesel engine in it, he didn't know which model it was, but he said that they have had a lot of problems with them? does anyone know which model this is? I am looking at the 1.6D drive S (start/stop) around a 59 reg

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you

Welcome to the site. I have a 1.6D Start/Stop 2010 model SE LUX. I am very pleased with it, although dont expect the fuel economy figures that Volvo quote - reaslistically I'm averaging about 50mpg of mixed driving. My previous car was a 1.9TD Passat, and although the engine isn't as torquey, its not gutless and suits me fine. I think the engine is the Peugeot unit, which is also fitted to some Ford models. Trim is good, although the build quality in my opinion is better than Ford, but not as good as say Audi or BMW. I have the light grey leather interior, and I much prefer it to the black - makes the interior seem more spacious for some reason. I have fitted a few R Design accessories - pedal covers, rear spoiler and brushed chrome mirror covers - I think the rear spoiler is a must have as it really finishes the rear of the car. If I was buying one now, I would make sure that the audio system has a USB connection. I have a Parrott MKi9100 bluetooth, and although brilliant, listening to my playlists on my iPhone is a compromise as you cant use the steering wheel controls to change volume, songs etc.

Make sure it has had the 3rd year service and full MOT as main dealer charges up to £600 for all this, as DPF resevoir needs filling with additive.A few two and three quarter year old ones around ready for this.

Regards

yes hes right , regarding the 4 cylinder diesel in the V50 they cause all sorts of problems when installed in the peugeots and citroens , however volvo have not had much trouble with them , they modified the egr valve in 2006 and had no further problems whilst citroen contunue to suffer . Also these engines suffer when neglected , most volvos are not neglected so ok . Citroens were riddled with sump oil leaks , volvo used a better, different coloured sealant and this wasnt a problem ..
As long as you service your car properly and use the correct oil you will be fine .
