Default V50 Key advice

Hi all, I'm new to V50 pages of this forum but semi-regular on the 850 / V70 section.

Looking for some assistance please. Just bought a '08 V50 D5 SE Lux with 97k on the clock.

Came with 2 keys, 1 working perfectly, one chewed by the previous owners dog. I bought a replacement case from Ebay and transfered the PCB & battery. It locks/unlocks the car perfectly, however, when I tried to start the car, it wouldn't turn over & the message on the dash display says key not recognised.

My question are;
1. Presumably the damaged case has some sort coding which the car recognises?
2. I'm assuming the car & key need to go to Volvo to be programmed?
3. Any idea of the cost?

Thanks, Gerry

Yes the ignition key transponder is in the bottom of the key part , Volvo do not allow used keys to be programmed in twice . a new key was about £80 last time i did one + programming ( 20 mins labour) and software + VAT ..

Thanks Clan, exactly the info I was after.

I'll get it booked into Volvo over the next couple of weeks

UK prices are much better then here, then as I was quoted 250euros for the same :/
GMC -I can suspect D5 is the same as T5 for keys etc (almost impossible to get them coded elswhere then dealership network) so also be prepared for them to say "sorry, we wont code YOUR key, need to order new one" as just like Clan said, it needs to be blank new one with code card.
On a sidenote - is the old chewn key still intact in the RFid transponder section? it is possible to take the "blade" apart and take RFid chip out, providing its not damaged and that you know what you are doing, otherwise also possible to have it done in auto-key specialised shops, cost about 40-50e to transfer it to blank blade.

The thing is , volvo security is the best in the business and has been since around 1999. The system will not allow a key to be programmed the second time , how does it know? Well that unique ID number will be stored on the Volvo HQ computer as allocated to the original car . Records go back to at least 1979 ...

Thats all cool, but somehow I realy miss going to local auto-key store asking them "hi, can you copy that key for me please" and havind working 2nd key with immobiliser clone for less than kidney
on a sidenote - T5/D5 pay premium for being actual Volvo not Ford/PSA as you can easily replicate 1.6D key and have the car started by your frioendly locksmith where on T5 he gives up after an hour :P

but if you can easily go and get a key duplicated so can the thief :-) Volvo keep records on every key which has been programmed , added or removed , they know date , time , the premises and the individual who carried it out ....

yea, thats fair enough - I got a bit surprised seeing you can start up a 1.6D that was deadlocked with lost key using good auto-locksmith, but also a bit relieved when he couldnt do the same with mine ;P
