Exhaust options?
Hi, I changed both the centre and rear silencer sections on my Amazon exhaust earlier this year (standard mild steel from Brookhouse) and the centre silencer has already developed a fault - a loose baffle which rattles when cold and then seems to choke the flow a bit when warm. Guessing it was never welded together properly in the first place.
I don't do many miles at the moment (only about 1,000 miles this year so far in total) but I can't ignore the problem. I'm thinking I have three options: 1) change the centre section again 2) see if an exhaust specialist would cut it open and repair it (do people do this?) 3) go the whole hog and get a custom job. The car is an automatic, which means the front pipe is not available off the shelf in any case, though as far as I know it's in decent condition. I don't want anything that makes a big sporty noise as that wouldn't suit the car - it just needs a nice, smooth flowing, well-made exhaust that's going to last. I have a local garage that offers custom exhausts, but I haven't asked them yet - I thought I'd see what advice you folks might have first. Any wisdom, please? Cheers, Andy.

Personally I would go stainless , custom made ,BUT suitably silenced . Custom builders can create whatever you want , the only restriction is your cash limit

Andy;
That rattle emanating from a relatively new silencer is a real bother...perhaps when you replace it, you can cut it open, show the problem to supplier (and hopefully the receipt to show that it's not so old), and claim warrantee on it... ...as far as replacement, I have to agree with dingo...changing to a SS Exh Sys changes it from a wear-out and replaceable item, to a permanent part of the car...and at this point, when the car has been kept alive so long, and is going to be kept even longer, that certainly makes sense to me (and also justifies the high initial cost). Replacement should be made in 2" ID size...it's tight, but less restrictive (don't forget front silencer double top heat-shield, unless you want to cook your passenger's legs). Cheers PS; Dingo; We love our Volvo oldies, but here's nothing wrong with a TT! I also loved the wife's 2001 225HP!...its handling put a permanent smile on my face which could only be removed by surgery! |
