Whatever the case, I would have expected maybe a 15-20% penalty with an autobox at worst?

My 2.4 170 petrol auto gives me about 23 mpg towing a car transporter with a car on it. I get 29 around & about and 37 on a long steady run with my wife in the passenger seat.
