As the main point about a winter tyre is the way it retains flexibility in cold conditions then it should be obvious that the construction of the tyre is from softer materials, ergo you will still get excellent grip in the dry, in summer; unfortunately this is allied to truly appalling levels of tyre wear!

With all due respect double bollox back with an extra smile, a summer tyre is all about contact area with the road surface, ask any biker.....

Apart from being rude you really do miss the point, it's not just about rubber softness but contact surface area with the road, ask any biker....

Probably why on the track they use slicks more rubber contact.

And being as the amount of rubber in contact with the road is the same with a winter or summer tyre the only items being different are the tread pattern and the constituency of the compound in the tyre.

Ergo your argument is invalid

(minor point, but where was he being rude? did you miss the rather large smiley?)

It makes the statement humorous, and I would take that statement as humorous with or without the smiley - it is common parlance, even the spelling is seen as indicating humour.

The tone of the rest of the mail is factual, further leading me to say - where is the rudeness?

I'm with Teejay on this. Language a bit strong for directing against a fellow forum member in my view, smiley or no smiley.

Re winter dring and winter tyres - being a Swede I would think I know a bit about this as it is the law nowadays and winter tyres have been used for many years. I personally have driven many thousands of miles with studded or non-studded tyres.

A summer tyre will never be as good as a winter tyre in snowy, ice or wintry conditions and low temperatures. Just like what has been said already. Winter tyres can be used year round (non-studded that is), but due to the thread pattern, you will see a longer braking distance and higher wear on dry roads. You can multiply by several times, the braking distance on dry roads using studded tyres.

When fitting winter tyres, one should always get smaller tyres, both diameter as well as width as a smaller size is easier to drive with in snow.

If you ever get stuck in snow, don't forget to switch of your DSTC (antispin).

Winter tyres do have a softer compound = faster wear on dry roads.

As a note winter tyres are not yet the law everywhere in EU, but personally I think it will be sooner rather than later. At least in north Europe including Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Holland, Belgium, UK etc.

Current test winner in Swedish, German and other EU winter tyre tests are the Continental 830P's (non-studded).

Drive safe in winter!

Good post NewVolvo had a look on the conti website and they do look the business. Here is their view on winter tyres in the UK - http://www.conti-online.com/generato...ter-tyres.html
