your particular car = 54000 or 10 years which ever comes first .
Now if your car has it's third ( 54000 ) service and it hasnt reached 54000 miles it probably wont get done . So a lot may get forgotton especialy as they change owners and get sold from Non volvo dealers ... I believe the recent recall may be for those such cars .. The whole D3 , 4 and 5 aux belt and tensioner thing now is very complex from 2007 onwards . engine number ranges , model years , 54000 miles , 36000 miles , recalls !

Thanks Clan.
What type of damage can be expected if it goes/snaps?

erm...are we talking about the Cam Belt here?
I thought it was the utility belt (what used to be the fan belt)...No? I had one go in my old Scenic ( some years ago) and all that went was the water pump.

No it is the AUX belt which when it comes off ,usualy wraps itself around the lower cog for the cam belt ! Volvo cambelts have always been and still are very robust , they have kevlar in them ! its the aux belt which can in rare cases cause problems . The design hasnt really changed since these engines were born in 1990 .It didnt need to as back then and up until 2007 they were excellent using top quality tensioners and idler wheels , I believe ford cut costs and caused the problems we have today .

Hmmm...Ford don't use 5 cylinder diesel engines, they have a tie-in with PSA.
If anyone was going to be cost cutting and suffering as a result it would surely be PSA engines (look at GM currently offloading the shares they bought in Peugeot). I think any 5 cylinder diesel engine issue lie squarely with Volvo.

It would appear the problems were there before the migration. My own car was a 54plate D5 which started chewing through aux belts and tensioners. That can't be blamed on Ford assembly 3 years later.
People were complaining of cam belt failures before 2007.
