Diagnostic fault finder
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I have a Volvo S40 1.6 Diesel 2006 reg engine management light first came on a few weeks ago took it to a garage they charged £40 for testing and clearing the fault code management light. Advice given take it for a 10 min run on the motorway to clear partical filter, said that just to go back if the light comes on again, well 4 weeks later its back on, so I sent for a diagnostic code reader from amazon was supposed to work on any car from 2001 but won't work, just comes up link error meaning- wont talk to the computer. Cant keep paying a garage every time the engine mangement light comes on. Does anyone know of a reader that works on the Volvo S40? Thanks Bill |

Which one did you buy?
Diesels from 2004 should be EOBD compliant, but could require CAN bus protocol. |

Was it the maxi-scan one? I think the model number is something like 3002? If so then for some unexplained reason it won't communicate with the car even though it states it does.
I got one recently but had to return it as it would fail on the ISO check. |

You said at start that garage charged £40 to read the codes.
That is a lot and whilst you may not have need of any dealer help if you can get a code reader that can fully read the complete code, I would perhaps shop around with different dealers before getting a code read. I think I was charged no more than £15-20 when I had need of this a couple of years back. |
