Default Oil dipstick pipe - leak

Hi all,

S80 2009 2.4d 163

Noticed oil level low warning appear a few days ago on the dash.

Stopped and used the dipstick and it was barely registering anything.

I then noticed that the pipe that directs the stick into the bottom end of the engine was completely detached and there was oil over the hoses and front end of the engine at the bottom.

I managed to push it back into the opening but not sure how secure it is meant to fit.

I topped up with 1L and I've not had anymore issue, but I have oil where it shouldn't be now.

How tight a fit should that pipe feel?
How can I clean the oil spray off safely? I know a steam clean is an option, but I was hoping there might be a more DIY option!

Thanks all

if its a 5 cylinder engine, then the distick tube will probably have a bracket near the bottom, sticking out to the side about 3 " This bolts to the block via a bolt. If you put your hand down, or look with a torch, you should see the hole. Bolt has fallen out. Unless it different from the D5

Its a 5 cylinder yes.

I'll take a look tomorrow about the bracket and bolt. Thanks

Steam clean? That’s not a very good idea. Once you start cleaning with one of them, the temptation is to clean the rest of the engine & that’s where things can go wrong. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could destroy the electrics. I’m not saying that you don’t, but a steam cleaner in a modern engine isn’t a good idea. You don’t want water near electrics or water in engine, which could happen if you start blasting around the dipstick area with a steam cleaner. The alternator is also near dipstick. You don’t want water getting into that!

A much safer option is a tin of brake cleaner (has multiple uses, not just for brakes) & scrub by hand with a sponge, old cloths or brushes. Steam cleaner does not get my vote.

That's what I've opted to go for! Thanks

Yes, my bolt is missing. Any idea on what size of bolt I need to replace it with? Thanks

Default That Bolt.

After reading Green Van Man’s thread I fitted a full size dipstick to my daughter’s XC70 D5 a couple of years ago and obtained all the relevant parts from my local main dealer.
The bolt is part no. VO985133 and according to my records is M7 x 20.
