Default Barrel

Great article and very helpful. Can someone please clarify that I need to take out the barrel to get to the steering lock bit ? Currently the car is running, with the aid of a screwdriver, as I have the rear switch part free from the barrel. Not concerned about the "no steering lock" part, but would like to get the key part working correctly.

This really is a great forum. Thanks Guys and Girls

Default Steering Lock

So after almost 4 days of starting with a screwdriver I finally managed to get enough time to look at the problem. I removed the barrel easily enough (with the aid of excellent pictures from gatos) and then part of the steering lock mech, together with the broken pat (culprit!). But it appears that I have left part of the steering lock mech behind. Have I and if so how do I remove this part please ?

Apologies for the rubbish pictures (when compared to previous ones on this thread but that's the best my Kodak Brownie can do (poor workman and tools , etc )

Thanks in advance

Default HEEEEELP! Key won't turn past position II!!!

Hi gang - same issue, key won't turn past position II!!!

Of course my car is out in the street in a 1hr parking zone so I need to be able to move it asap.

I'm trying to determine how to get the car running and based on what I've read in this thread, if I unplug a wire from the back of the lock mech (and stick a screwdriver in somewhere???) I should be able to start the car...I'm just very fuzzy on the rest.

Is anyone online that can assist?

Here you go. just remove the one screw and the ignition barrel will just come out. Put the spare key or a flat blade screwdriver in there and just turn it. Just make sure that you have a key in the ignition, so it can pick up the immobiliser signal

Alex, you are going to need to start charging us by the call! Thank you, that's exactly what I was after. Now I just need to coach my daughter on how to start 'er. Her friends are gonna love this.

I guess I just need a replacement barrel then, correct? Assuming that is the case, do I really need to take anything apart (including shear bolts)? If I understand the instructions correctly, the wear item is the lock mech itself, right? So as long as I can pop it out using the allen key method I should be able to replace that alone, correct?

You have my number now, so feel free to contact me if you ever have an emergency.... And it's free....

If the barrel lock is damaged, then I think only Volvo can get you another one. However, if it is the metal bits like in the photos at the top of this thread, then its a different story.

Assuming that the actual barrel is shot, then a botched solution is to get a key and lock barrel from a donor car and fit them on the car. Then unscrew the immobiliser ring and tape the old key to it and hide it under the steering column. You will then have a wokring car....

If it is the metal bits further in that are broken, then you would need a replacement ignition barrel housing with all the bit intact.
