Quick related question, are there other gearboxes on the x40 besides M56 and M5P?

Alright, apparently there are also M3P and M5D gearboxes, besides automatics AW50-42 and AW55-50. Any knowledge about which boxes went with which engines and years?

I have this problem. my v 40 is series 1, X reg., year 2000. it appears to the have the renault gearbox, from a description of the shift-pattern in an earlier reply in this thread. my question is this: can I change the gear linkage bushes without draining out the gearbox oil?

yes , a fairly easy job , 2 plastic bushes and 2 rubber O rings and a sleeve at each end of the gearchange rod . Do not undo the adjuster nut on the rod itself unless the gearchange is worse with the new bushes .... Someone may have adjusted it with worn bushes if that was the case .

Hi Clan, have you ever found slack because of bushing in M56 type boxes or cables as said?

I find mine with some slack.... would you recommend any corrective measures?

Hi all,

I seem to have the volvo box (reverse is bottom-right), and shifting into reverse is very difficult (need to really force the lever back). 1st is also a bit difficult, but not quite as much.
The problem doesn't go away if I switch into 1st or 2nd and drive forward a few inches.

Any idea what it could be?

Hi , on older units you can get some free play but it doesn't seem to have any effect on gearchange .

It sounds like clutch drag .... The clutch centre plate gently rotating when you have the pedal down , caused by the centre plate sticking slightly on the gearbox input shaft so it cant slide away from the flywheel .
