Default Changed battery and now wont start. Immobilised?

Hi all. I have a 2001 S40, I recently changed the battery as it was dying, however since changing it the car will crank but will not start. It's not started once since changing. I have tried almost everything recommended in other threads in terms of different ways of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and locking and unlocking the car. Nothing has worked. The AA looked at it and couldn't help. It was towed to local garage who have had it for a week and have just said they have no idea but suspect immobiliser.

Can somebody please help as it seems crazy that changing the battery could essentially write the car off. It's not worth much but I love it and want it to live again!

Thank you in advance

I don't want to offer false hope, but is the engine petrol or diesel and do you what has been checked by AA and your local garage?

It's petrol. They checked all fuses and relays which where fine, battery good, spark good but no fuel. Tank has fuel and fuel pump is good but not getting to engine. Not sure what else the garage checked but they had run out of ideas.

from what you say it should be pretty easy for a garage to figure out why the fuel isnt getting from the tank to the fuel rail on the engine , is there any fuel pressure ? that is the first check .. Maybe it has run out of fuel , Changing the battery doesn't cause this kind of thing ....

I wouldn't have imagined changing the battery would cause this but it appears it has. Car has fuel and I can only imagine the garage would have checked pressure

I don't know if this is much help but I recently had to change the battery on my saxo and it refused to start afterwards. Ended up needing to reset the enertia/fuel cut off switch. I assume the Volvo has one but not sure where it would be. Maybe someone else can direct you to it. I initially overlooked the inertia switch but that's what it was in the end.

Just had a look around and someone had similar issues to you and it ended up being a faulty camshaft sensor.

No volvo have never used those , that's British Leyland 1980's technology :-) Back then volvo were using an electronic relay to do that , when the coil pulsed stopped , so did the fuel pump ...
