Default Air Bag Expiry Date!

Hi all,

Well 5 years out to they expire.

So what's the go?

Do they need to be replaced in 2013 and what will be the cost?

Not at the present rate of progress.
The expiry date for air bags was something of an arbitrary figure, and the time seems to be being extended further and further as more experience of air bag life is gained from the numbers of 'older' cars fitted with them.
It was thought that the bags would deteriorate in time, and might cease to function, but the life seems to be far better than the rather conservative original estimate.
I don't believe that any air bags have yet been replaced purely on expiry date basis.

I think I'm correct in this. not doubt other forum members will put me right if I'm talking tripe.

Yep you are right , volvo initialy had a 10 year inspection then it moved to a 15 year inspection , now there is no time limit . The system is very well monitored by the SRS unit so any electrical or wiring problem will be picked up . Volvo obviously have been looking at older air bags and finding they havent deteriorated so a few years ago they stated there was no longer a time limit as long as the visible bits and pieces are looked at and are in order .

No way of testing them other than driving car at a strong wall(not recommended)

I actually believe that's exactly what Volvo have been doing with a selection of old cars. Not driving them at a wall (walls are too soft anyway, they fall down) but actually running them into the crash test blocks, and seeing how the air bags deploy.

Hi,

I was told I shouldn't eat my airbags after the expiry date..
Could be hazardous for health!!

Apparently mercedes tracked down one of the first 500 cars they made with airbags, gave the owner a brand new car and crashed his old one. The airbag still worked.
It wouldn't surprise me if volvo have done something similar.

Apply 24 volts to the terminals. If they deploy then you're OK, they're still good........?????????????????????
