Fuel consumption
Why do Volvo claim that the latest V40 will do 83mpg!!
It is pure fantasy. Do they pluck these figures off the fuel consumption tree. I have now done 1700 miles in my 2014 V40 and the fuel consumption gauge says that I am doing 51 mpg. I have just filled the car and the real mpg is only 46mpg. And that is after a long run. I did not believe the claimed figures - these are always inflated, but I thought I would get at least 55mpg. Get your fuel usage figures in the right ball park Volvo. Apart from that, the car is excellent!! |

Even the dealers say they are at least 6% optimistic. We all know they are optimised figures unlikely to be achieved in the real world but they become pointless when they are just bolloks.
I shut my eyes and pay the bill when I fill up, consoling myself that the fun I had driving that last tankful was worth the cost. Paul. |

Do they not get the mpg figures from the engine running on a test bed with no auxiliarys attached, I'm sure I read somewhere this is how they can claim them.

There are lies, dam lies and statistics.
Actually it's meant for comparisons sake. All the manufacturers have to test to the same criteria so although the figures are not achievable you can compare one model with another.

I feel your pain. Our V50 D2 is "supposed to" do 65 MPG while in reality it's about 51. This page seems to confirm what you're getting:
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/volvo/v40-2012 I would encourage anyone looking to buy a more fuel-efficient car to check this page out first in order to realign their expectations!
