Crockers, thanks for the real world experience. I am hoping there are others who have been through this and could comment based on their own experience.

wimorrison: was the improved MPG indicated by the car or calculated from miles travelled and fuel consumed? I have read elsewhere that the OBC gets fooled by some re-maps/chip boxes.

I can't comment on what a remap does to the OBC but I can say that I noticed a 15% improvement in economy when I got my 5 series automatic remapped a few years ago. To me it felt like the advantage came from the increased torque, allowing you to accelerate up to speed more quickly and then being able to back off the throttle earlier than before I had it remapped.

It's something I've been thinking about for the 2.0D FWD XC60 I'm about to pick up on Friday. I do around 25,000-30,000 miles per year so I should easily recover the cost of the remap over the 5 years I intend to keep the car for.

All my previous Volvo diesels (V70 XC60 & 90) have all be remaped, via RICA,, ever one returned better fuel consumptions,, if driven in a similar manner as previously,, (for me motorway cruising) approx 10%, via fill ups, not the OBC fibbing to me !!

For me, the improved driveabilty was more important that the mpg figuars.. particularly so with the early XC90 auto boxs !!

Saying that,, current V70D5 has the Volvo polestar fitted,, Jury is still out on this one,, not convinced as yet !!!!

Don't even think about the various box's on the market,, a crude way of doing it, by just playing with the injector timings

The remap was a RICA economy map that was down by a firm near Slough, I was working that way at the time, thankfully no longer - Ricky Gervais' parody of Slough was accurate

The rolling road tested the output before and after the remap, hence I know that was correct when they did it and the consumption was worked out from fuel and miles over 6 months or so of mixed driving.

The box appeared to give more power and brim to brim showed that the consumption was better, but not as good as the proper remap, but then the remap cost around £500 and the box cost around £100 - assuming memory is correct as it was several years ago - and as I said they should be much better now than they were then.

Just gores to prove you get what you pay for. Rica have a good reputation - I would have considered them but for warranty issues so weren't Polestar route.
