@ Sony

So its 90-95% front wheel drive then... although if even just 1% goes to the rear all the time, then it is permanent, is it not, like you suggested?

Regards

I must admit it makes no sense to me what so ever as well, just what I have read on Swedespeed.

I had a Skoda Yeti 4wd that also runs the Haldex system. There were a range of answers on their forum about how much power goes to the back tyres and when, similar confusion as to on here. My own experience was that when I came to change the tyres on the front of the car the rears were within 1mm of them and so I ended up changing all 4 at the same time. Based on past experience of fronts usually wearing to a greater degree than rears my unscientific test would suggest that the rears were working more often than people suggest when they talk about these new types of 4wd.

I believe the weight of these systems is quite considerable and has quite an impact on mpg. I found Haldex to be wonderful in two awful winters but I now wonder if it is better to have 2wd and winter tyres rather than pay extra for 4wd in the first place and then have the extra fuel premium. Of course if you drive through fields on occasions then 4wd it is. My son played rugby for one of those years and parking in muddy fields was a doddle with a 4wd, a bit more stressful for those in regular cars.

Hmm it is like anything really a car will go no where without grip, it is like the plonkers with SUV's thinking they can get anywhere sure...on those low profile, large width tyres a small FWD will make mincemeat of them.

Absolutely right. I was talking about low level stuff. The Haldex system works wonderfully well for getting you out of basic problem situations if you drive sensibly. If you think you are bomb proof and can go anywhere they you will end up a cropper. For most people it gives peace of mind and does exactly the job you want it to. For the rest...................
