What do you pay for your oil over in Ireland Bernard? Do you go with cheaper stuff, or do you prefer the branded, more expensive oil.

Rossi, price of anything car related over here ( in ROI) is an arm and a leg except for diesel which is £1.15/litre . I bought oil in January from ECP in Belfast at UK pound prices Triple QX 5W-30 as it was cheap but having read skyships posts I dont trust ECP anymore, I sent many emails to them regarding their part no 521 77 6061 5L 5W-30 synthetic which claims A3/B4 on their website but nothing on the container. They did make one response saying I should get in touch with the original manufacturer so I pointed out to them that its their own branded oil and could they please tell me who is the original manufacturer, anyway too late now as its now in the engine. For the past 10 years I used Havoline Extra 10W-40 which was around £12/5L from Morrisons which I always bought in England but now they stopped selling it but ECP sell it as part no 521770011 at £28-20/5L which makes me extremely distrustful of the whole oil retailing business, rip off merchants.

If you are looking for cheap oils Castrol GTX 10/40 is OK and the 15/40 is a good suumer oil. I'm surprised there is not a good Fleabay dealer, but I know the postal regs are tricky in cost terms.

Went to Costco this weekend and their engine oil deals got my attention.
About £30 for 5l Mobil 0w40 a3b4 Under £40 for 20l of synthetic Chevron 5w30 a5b5, "low friction" Worth considering for my 2002 S60 D5? Last edited by constantin0; Jul 7th, 2014 at 10:54. |

The Chevron will be good for your d5, its probably the same as Havoline extra also a cheap Chevron brand which I have been using for 10 years in mine.

The 20l containers were in 2 different shades of Blue though (both 5w30 a3b4), not sure if there is a material difference in the oil spec. Product code is the same (0024440020E). The only slight difference I could see was the color of the tins and the the batch numbers:

Chevron 5/30 is almost certainly below min viscosity specs, which are based on the use of Edge 0/30, which is almost at the top of the 30 range. It might be OK in winter, but too thin for summer use in my opinion.

5W-30 should be good for your 2002 D5 unless your planning on driving around Riyadh in August, have a look at page 137 of the 2002 handbook for your Volvo V70.

Old diesel engines often have less than perfect injectors and compression which results in some degree of fuel contamination and oil consumption. If you move up a grade it means the engine oil will still be in limits as regards viscosity when it's changed. It also helps reduce bearing wear and oil consumption. When a Volvo dealer decides to use a 30 grade, they will use Castrol Edge 0/30 which is not only at the top of the 30 range in viscosity terms, BUT has a base stock that does not suffer from high temp shearing like most cheaper 5/30 oils. None of the German Iffy lubes will use a 5 or 10/30 in any older Volvo unless you supply a Volvo dealer spec oil like Edge 0/30, for a variety of good reasons, although running out of oil on long Autobahn trips is a main one, as is avoiding complaints of hot rattles at idle. For a hot desert the best oil range is 15/40 for normal use, or 20/50 for heavy towing.

In the 2002 V70 handbook there is no mention of Castrol Edge it seems to me that any oil within spec is ok, did Volvo make a mistake by not mentioning Castrol in their own handbook ? On the attached chart from 2007 it appears Volvo are recomending Castrol but is this just Castrol having done a good marketing tie up with Volvo enticing customers to spend a lot more money with no benefit. The compression on my 2003 D5 was measured recently with 690 to 700psi on all cylinders so no loss of compression after 180000 miles on cheap non Castrol oil. The leak back on my injectors is minimal and all 5 are within a narrow range within spec. I calculate fuel consumption on a moving average basis( using brim to brim not the trip ) and can see no measurable decline so far and on an economy run it still does very high mpg but no point mentioning whats possible in a D5 as people just dont believe it. The turbo is whistling slightly since around 120000, I have removed it twice in five years and cannot see any undue wear in the rotor or bearings. My point is that I would have wasted a lot of money had I used Castrol Edge or anything costing more than £12.50/5L and the cheap £3.50 oil filters I spent so far and perhaps an even cheaper oil would have been just as good. My concerns about making my 200000 mile target are more with clutch/DMF/cam belt or electronic module failures than the engine showing any signs of wear through using cheap oil. My overall objective is to get maximum miles at the lowest cost and paying £30 or £40 for 5litres of oil does not make sense to me.
