Went to tax my scooter last month and thought I was on the DVLA site, long story short, I was charged an extra £40 by a company called taxdisc-direct. Just be aware they're out there. Nothing the credit card company can do and they told me there's a similar site doing passport renewals also.

Be careful.

The same kind of thing happens for booking driving tests, id expect it does for most of the stuff done by the government. Always pays to double check your on the proper site, shame they caught you out but im sure quite a few people have done the same.

Same problem with renewing the EHIC card. Will happily Carthage you for something that is free. Make sure you start at the Deirect .gov website rather than using google where these fraudulent companies pay to appear at the top of the list

We had similar when booking my son's driving test, I think he googled 'book a driving test' and as already mentioned they seem to pop to the top of the list. The site we were on wasn't very well set up so it started to look suspicious and we went back to the leaflets he'd got with his licence and found the address of the real .gov website.

I can understand how you may end up on one of these sites as I've done the same when trying to apply for my different bike tests a few years ago.
How did you end up paying more though? Were they underhand in displaying charges or were they upfront about the cost but you didn't double check their figures?

Don't really remember seeing the 'administration' charge appearing, even on the total payment
