Green card is not actually insurance, just proof you have insurance. Maybe the OP means the extension of fully comp had expired, hence the vehicle was only third party?

most insurers will only cover even 3rd party for limited continuous time abroad, in event of claim would want proof of when you went, and planned to come back.
