Default V40 2.0T Brakes siezing on

Hi All,

My 2001 V40 2.0T (28,000 miles) has recently had a problem with the left front brake siezing on. On investigating the only problem I could see was rusty/scaly deposits in pad guide chanells - all cleaned out and Copperslipped. Piston seemed to go in easilly (with bleed nipple open), and all well for 3-400 miles. Now it has happened again.

Question is - any history of similar faults ? Is this more likely to a caliper problem or something more serious ?

All help gratefully recieved ! Adam.

This may give you some pointers

1/ What condition was the dust/rubber seal around the piston? if there is a tear/rip in it, moisture can get in and cause rust deposits on these precision parts and cause these type of seizing problems.

2/ How worn are your brake pads/discs? it may be worth renewing the pads so the pistons are resting in a different place. If there are signs of overheating on the disc (blueing of the metal)or glazing of the pads, if extreme you may have to renew both anyway

3/ It might be worth checking to see if your brake pads have not tapered, which can be caused by seizing piston, or piston not sitting square to its housing and they can in extreme circumstances wedge themself in.

On my wifes (Fix Or Repair Daily)Escort, I had the same problem, I had cleaned the slides and pad guides, but it returned a few 1000 miles later, this time I gave it a dam good thrashing with a wire brush and emery paper to remove all rust/dirt deposits and copperlipped the slide pins. It has not returned in 30,000 miles, its cheap first measure.

I hope this is of some help

Regards

P.H.
