Yes once the bonding starts to fail it is only a matter of time, without the rubber strip the leaking starts almost immediately. The leak can be exacerbated if, like me, you drive your car over a high kerb daily (one wheel at a time) and the car body twists.

When I mentioned thin rubber strip I was meaning the older style rubber that secured the screens completely around the screen, not the top gutter type rubber that was on my car. I also believe that the rear hatch window is also bonded and with all the opening and closing I would have thought that there could have been problems with this bond as well, although I havent read anywhere about any failures and I would assume the same bonding sealant was used ?

Well I decided to remove the trim from the bottom of my window earlier this week to see if I could see any pools of water lying there. I didn't which either means I don't have a problem, or the problem is elsewhere.
p.s. Any water that can be seen has come from me washing the area before refitting the trim. |

TT82, this area has a drain hole so no water does not mean no leak. I had a look here after my screen leak and after hearing the slushing sound which was water in the front bulk head.

Cheers PEGE63. On my way home the sloshing sound was more noticeable than ever when I took a few roundabouts with gusto. The search for a solution continues.......

Also had a very small amount of water ingress from top of original windscreen on 09 plate car. I could physically see it dripping between glass and headlining.
Cured when replacement screen was fitted. I've also asked Volvo why I was getting water through at the back end of the car. This manifested itself with water between the headlining and the plastic roof panel the interior light is in. They recommended I removed the 2 black rubber grommets on the tailgate shuts and reseated them on silicone sealant. This cured the problem! I also experienced the sloshing sound when the body rolls. I thought it was in the roof (although my car isn't equipped with a sunroof) Volvo knew exactly what is was - as others have found - a plastic scuttle / bulkhead that has insufficient drain holes. These were drilled and problem fixed. |

re water leak
hi, I read that there was a problem with the way some windscreens were bonded to the car, and that there was a service document that details where to drill holes in the bulk head to let the water out.
I have to admit that this car is no where as good as my previous d5 manual |

I had been meaning to post a reply on this thread but forgot.
1: A couple of months ago I did a 4 hour drive south for a meet. The last 30 minutes or so were done at speeds which the local plod would not have looked kindly upon, as I had seen another V70 with a reg which suggested it may have been going to the same place and I followed it at that speed to see if I was right. (Which I wasn't.) Upon arriving at my destination and parking up, there was a leak from my vehicle. It was coming from the bulkhead area, behind the engine. Now I normally have my Climate Control set to Auto with the A/C constantly on, but I had switched it off for the past day or 2. I know that you can get condensation from the A/C rad after periods of non-use but it didn't seem likely, and the A/C rad is at the front of the engine bay, not the rear. On the way home, the sloshing sounds dissappeared. Problem solved! (At least until the next time it rained or I washed the car!) 2: About 2 weeks ago I got back from taking my car on a 3 week trip to Italy. I couldn't say the precise point it happened, but the continental heat again seemed to do the trick of curing my sloshing sounds. (Which only lasted to I get back to Blighty!) So it would seem that if you generate enough heat at the bulkhead, either from a damn good thrashing creating high engine/exhaust temps or ambient temperature, the heat causes the metal to expand which creates a gap from which the trapped water can escape. I got a new windscreen fitted at 110k miles through my insurance and this sorted the problem. £75 well spent!
The windscreen wasn't cracked or chipped, but with 110k on the clock, it was badly scratched from the windscreen wipers, and the glare from low sun/ oncoming headlights seriously impaired my vision. I told all this to the insurance company, mentioning that the bad glare was increasing my chance of an accident, and they were more than happy to replace it so long as I paid the £75 excess. I mentioned the leak to the glass fitter to ensure he put plenty of bonding seal on! Driving at night is now so much less stressful with a new windscreen. Nick 2008 XC70 |
