Default 940 heater control valve

My wife's 1991 940 SE has developed a wet driver's footwell and a small but significant coolant loss.

Investigation reveals a slight drip at the water control valve. I don't think the heater matrix is leaking but in any case will replace the valve first.

The problem is that this is a manually operated, plastic valve on the bulkhead. The means of attachment is not obvious.

I looked in the Haynes manual but this only covers the air conditioned valve, which is electronically operated and under the bonnet! These manuals are truly useless!!

Can anyone tell me how to replace this?

Thanks

It all depends on whether your wife's car has an automatic gearbox (very easy to change) or a manual gearbox ( a bit more involved and difficult). Tell us which gearbox and we will give you the answer.

All the best, Peter.

The car has an automatic box, and therefore no clutch pedal to get in the way!!

Regards

There are two cables (with stiff wire inners) which mount to the plate holding the tap lever on the heater valve. Their outers are held in place by small spring clips. These need to be released so that the operating lever and valve assembly can be removed from the bulkhead. With the heater hoses (inside and outside) disconnected the valve and lever assembly can be removed from the bulkhead in a similar way to a bayonet light bulb fitting.

The problem with the manual gearbox is that the clutch lever gets well in the way necessitating it's undoing and moving out of the way so that the valve assembly can be twisted to remove it.

Reassembly is in reverse order after changing the lever assembly onto the new valve. There is one screw on the underside of the lever and plastic spring levers which hold the two parts together.

Let me know if you need further help and how you get on.

All the best, Peter.
