If it's any help, the system i built several years back was lovely and quiet all through the rev range until i booted it.

Then it sounded like a furious Rottweiler up to 3800rpm when the inlet tracts go short then changed to a howl very similar to an RAF Tornado with full afterburners and a fair bit louder than when i was "gentle" with it.

Just to clarify, that was a 90 degree V6, 24v 2.7L, non-Volvo engine.

If i was having a system built now, i'd go for slightly less silencing than standard so under gentle driving there's just a hint that it's a little sporty without being intrusive and then when giving it the beans, it gave a nice, subdued growl.

That way if i want to be all "quiet and gentlemanly" i can be but if i want to play, then i can be a hooligan with the best of them!

Mine has a mid box similar size to a standard one, huge back box because I thought it would be noisy in 3" and a 200 cell sports cat. It's fairly quiet, slight noise on idle due to the bore but a little sporty when you rev it. I did order a slightly smaller back box just incase which would make it a lot louder but I'm not sure I want to try it. To be honest I'm a bit disappointed it's so quiet but I'm glad it doesn't drone on the motorway, it was damned loud with just the cat and midbox and sounded like a tractor with just the downpipe (set off several car alarms).
