Default Handbrake and power steering

Hi,
I’m hoping somebody can help me with my 03’ XC70.
The handbrake is uneven on the right side and I’m trying to rectify this myself. Can anyone tell me what it is I’d need to do?
I need to fix for a WOF.
Thanking you in advance for any help/suggestions you can give.
I also need to replace my power steering rack. But I do not know if it is speed sensitive equipped or not. Can somebody tell me how to identify if it is or not? I can’t take it out of the car without having a new rack to replace it with straight away.
Thanks
Glenn.

I'd say you need new shoes, and when you're at it- new discs and pads as well.

It took me some 2-3 hours on my own, including cleaning the wheels (so much easier when they're off)

Look up on YouTube SirRobb- rear shoes and cables replacement.

He's a member here, known as CheshireD5

Good luck.

If I'll find some time later, ill supply list of stuff you need.

Hello!

By saying that the handbrake is "uneven on the right side" you mean it grabs more or less than the left or something else?
Do you have a service record for the handbrake?
If not, first I would inspect my rear discs, how worn and rusty are they? If a lot then probably the handbrake shoes and drum haven't seen recent service and the disk would need to be removed for further inspection. However, if there's a lip on the drum, you will end up deforming the shoe springs (14, 16) and should get a set of spare springs just in case if you want to put it back together the same day.
If you don't want to remove the brake disc then another step would be to remove the centre console. This car has separate handbrake cables (9) from the cabin to the wheels, which are connected to the lever (1) via a single cable (8). When working the lever, both of the cables connecting to the hook must move equally, if not then either a cable or shoes are seized. Removing the drum and shoes, the bare cable must move smooth as silk, if not it's damaged and seized and needs replacing.
If the anchor (8) is tilted in the cabin, then either one of the cables has stretched or the wear on drums/shoes is unequal.

For the rack, look for an electrical connector/wire. Is it leaking?

Hi, yeah it’s leaking. Won’t pass a warrant. I’ve crawled underneath and can’t see any wiring.

Best way to confirm rack is to call a Volvo dealership and ask for the parts dept. Give them your VIN. They will confirm the correct part for your vehicle.
