Anti skid service required

Hi all i have an s60 d5 185 the message anti skid service required
this sometimes cleares itself
local garage say they plugged in there meter and no fault was coming up.
Any ideas on this 1please

I had that come up as well but mine came up along with the abs light. Plugging VIDA in suggested that my reluctor ring had bit the tit.

Sure enough ring was toast.

I did do a fair amount of YouTube surfing on the issue though and it sounds like a lot of the time it’s the sensor in behind the steering wheel that is at fault. Can’t recall what it’s called. Looks to be an easy job to change though...yawn sensor maybe?

Obviously you've not done a forum search - this is probably in the top 5 issues here.

LOL - it's yaw sensor. Steering angle sensor is a common fault (as on ours but can't be bothered to replace it).

go for the cheapest fix first reluctor rings inspect them carefuly the slightest crack will throw up faults its a quick fix if you have some tools .

You can got for the ‘cheapest’ fix first, but you’re still guessing what the fault is and that’s rarely the way.
Use Vida, look at the 4 wheel speed traces at once. If one of them is different, then that’s the place to start looking for a ring or sensor fault.

However, it could just as easily be a knackered set of brushes in the pump. I’ve had both problems and without Vida / Snap-On Versus, it would have been a very long weekend trying to change everything.

When my reluctor ring broke, it meant that the car couldn’t quite maintain rock-steady calm on cruise control at motorway speeds (because the car takes the aggregate speed from all four wheels to determine true road speed. If one is waving like a just married royal, it means the car will constantly try to correct for it. It’s quite a subtle feeling, you have to switch on to it.)
I also got the TC light on on left turns as it thought the outside wheel was spinning up.
When the pump failed, the light came on at pretty much the same point on my route home, sooner if it was hotter, later toward the end of the summer.
There’s no substitute for accurate diagnosis.

try going to a local volvo meet and see if any one has proper volvo code reading equipment .im shure someone will help you

Thanks for the replies guys looks like vida first.
wonder why the code reader at the garage didn't throw up the fault when the light wouldn't clear.

Probably because they were not using VIDA - you'll find specialists with VIDA or user on here, but the average non Volvo garage probably don't have it. Generic code readers might work for engine fault codes, but for other faults, you need VIDA.

I’ve had a couple of different episodes in the past where ‘anti skid service required’ warning popped up.

First was abs wheel sensors. Ignored the message initially but after a few weeks it started behaving strangely and brakes randomly applied etc. New sensor fitted via VMD for something like £150.

Most recent episode, same message came up again but after a few weeks the OBC told me the ABS / traction control systems had been switched off. The DTSC button light went out and couldn’t be switched back on. Got a bit worried at this point so took it in for a code read. Turned out to be the Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) and was a hefty £300 to replace.

I think whiten’s post above shows how quickly you could spend money by guessing. No ones going to be happy spending 300 notes on a SAS when it’s actually a wheel speed sensor; guessing would gone wrong quickly....
