Default how to remove bolt that clamps handbrake cable to underbody?

Hi,
I need to replace one of the handbrake cables (it doesn't slacken properly when the lever is let off - probably stretched and kinking)
Anyway, I have already replaced the one on the other side, so at least I know what I am in for this time!
When I replaced the other cable I was unable to remove the cable clamp where it is attached to the suspension. Its in a really awkward spot to work on, so I couldn't get a tool on the bolt to undo it (think it was a torx head) Had to cut the cable off!
This time I want to be prepared to do the job properly. What tool do I need? Or any other suggestions? Thanks.

Hi

This is quite a good write-up on changing the handbrake cable.

Hope it helps
Matt

there are two retainers for the handbrake cable one is held on with a rivit and the other with a torx just give the torx head a good clean out before trying to undo it

hi, had to swap rear beams on my two T5,s a couple of weeks ago.
on phase 1's the two fixings are both bolts and on phase 2's its a rivet and a bolt.
on torx bolts that need a bit of persuasion or i dont have room for a torx screwdriver i use an adjustable wrench adjusted slightly smaller than the torx bit and then knock it into the wrench with a hammer to get a tight fit.
make sure the bit you use is the correct size cos if its slightly to small its easy to shread the inside of the head and its then aggro.

Thanks Wayne,

That's an excellent suggestion.
To be honest I don't mind all the other hassle that comes with replacing the handbrake cable. But this bolt is a real pain.
Do you recommend any particular type of adjustable wrench?

any will do mate or a pair of mole grips works also.
ive also used the torx bit in a ring spanner in tight areas,6 or 7 mm IIRC but u cant get any downward pressure onto the bolt that way.
