S70 Newbie
Evening all,
Just picked up my next project on Friday, a 1999 S70 2.0 10v, and wanted to say hi, as I'll no doubt be tapping you all for help and info over the coming weeks/months. At this stage the plan is to get it running well, and sort some obvious issues (am in the process of buying new headlights and indicators for example as the reflectors are all but gone) before I start having any real fun. My first query however is regarding the performance, which can only be described as 'lazy' at best! I knew it wasn't going to set the hedgerows alight, but I got left in the dust repeatedly at lights and off roundabouts by fiestas etc on Friday - not something I was expecting! So what should I do to bring it back to rude health? Thanks in advance for any guidance Roge1 |

As you say a 2L engine in a hefty car is never going to make a rocket ship.I don't know about the 2L but the performance of my 2.4 V70 wa improved when I changed to contactless TPS.You don't say whether it's manual or auto,if it's auto do these gearboxes "learn" the driving style of the driver? If they do the previous owner may have been a "steady" type and the gearbox would need to "re-learn" the driving style of the new [you]owner.Just random thoughts, others will no doubt know better/have more experience of these.

A good modification (which is well known) is to adapt the throttle body. On the 2L I think is the larger TB with a large plastic chunk on it. You can replace the brass plate with a Volvo 960 on as this doesn’t contain the plastic chunk or grind the plastic off. That is really it unless you do some head work such as polish and porting, but not sure if anyone has actually done this to one of these would be interesting though as I was thinking about it. Anyway the throttle body is a cheap modification that from my point of view improves low down responsiveness especially in town. The car seems to get up to speed easier, and with cruise control on going up hills, it doesn’t change down as often.
Thanks, hope this helps |

Aubergine_S70, do you have, or know where this is, a guide for the Throttle Body work suggested?
Thanks again. |

When you're parked[driveway/side of the road]and in neutral does the car rev easily to the redline?Mine[admittedly a 2.4] would only go to 4,000 before I changed the TPS.From what I can gather from Haynes there were two types fitted with the changeover being '98-'99,the early version had a throttle cable where as the later-ME7-was a "drive by wire" and either a Bosch or Magnetti Marelli throttle was used.Again mine is a Magnetti system which has two TPS[but you only change one of them]I purchased a contactless TPS from e-bay which came with instructions-but it's called the Sacer method. If however yours is a Bosch unit then I can't help as I've never seen one to know anything about them.As ever I stand to be corrected by others more knowledgeable, but hope this is of help.
