Default LHS driveshaft - movement between shaft and aw55 box

Hi,

2006 V50 D5 5p Automatic (aw55)

Been getting vibration that becomes really noticeable on long up hill stretches. Round town or back roads don't really notice it at all. Disappears off throttle.

I still need to rule out wheel balance etc. but seemed most likely an inner joint so had a bit off a crawl underneath.

While both the inner joints had more play than I was expecting what's concerning me more is the amount of movement between the LHS cup/shaft inserted into the gearbox and the gearbox itself. I wouldn't have expected hardly any but it's clearly felt/visible.

Is this normal ? - I've no experience of auto boxes, is there oil behind there that will come out if shaft is removed?

Thanks

Jim

When I had something similar many years ago on a S60 D5 auto it was too much lateral play in the inner CV joint. I found that the vibration would diappear for a while after I'd had the front wheels in the air, but return after a mile or so driving, presumably because the with the wheel off the ground the joint extended itself to a non worn area but returned to its normal position after driving a short way. Changed the drive shaft and all was OK.
