Was the stretchy belt easy to replace. I need to do mine. Changed one but not the other.

It is a bit awkward to get it on. Volvo have a tool that slides the belt over the pulleys as you turn it but I did mine by hand with a little trial and error. If I remember correctly, I got it on a few ribs and then kept working it on a rib at a time until it was all on and in the right place.

As above, just work it on slowly whilst turning the pulleys.

Thumbs up Such a good guide V70 D5 185 Mk3

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this up. It is a great guide and as you say Haynes is useless for this year of car.
The part numbers are the final godsend!

Re stretching the air con belt over the pulleys. I recently replaced the auxillary belt and tensioner and air con belt on myV70. To ease fitting the air con belt I used an old credit card placed over the ridges on the pulley . This allowed the belt to slide on easier without damaging it. First engage belt on one pulley and as much as you can on the second pulley . Now inert card between the belt an pulley and ease it on . It does damage the card but protects the belt from damage .Suggest borrowing the other halfs. card and get double benefit

Please can someone advise how to also change the timing belt for this engine ?

The only guidance I've found on the t'internet is for the mk2 V70, which looks like a fairly simple job (I've replaced them before on other makes of car).

However, on my mk3 V70, the timing belt cover is right up against the humongous engine mount bracket, and overall clearance seems really tight. I can't see how there would be any room to get at the idler and tensioner, even with the wheel arch liner removed.

Surely it's just as easy as on a mk2 isn't it ?

Also, I'm struggling to find a genuine Volvo timing belt kit for the mk3 V70 D5. The only suppliers who have D5 belt kits are showing them for the mk2 (years 00-07) and are scratching their heads for a mk3 (2008). Perhaps it's the same kit for all D5s ?

Changing the belt is basically the same as the P2 and if you've done that you wont have any trouble .Support the engine on blocks or a trolley jack and remove the large engine mount. Room is still a bit tight but not too bad. I think there areGenuine Volvo spares suppliers who sell on ebay. The last one I fitted to my sons V70 was a Gates belt and tensioner and available from most good car factors . If in doubt buy parts from Volvo main agent as they are sometimes cheaper than you think.

Thanks Model Flyer - I'd begun thinking I'll need to remove the engine mounts, but it didn't sound right for a belt change.

Is the overall process of removing/fitted tensioners, pulleys and belts the same as with a mk2 V70/D5 ?

There are a few decent videos on YouTube from someone called 'sirobb' that cover the mk2 V70 with a D5. I've done timing belts on other 'non-Volvo' cars, and have all the tools to do a D5 (inc. 650Nm impact wrench)

I'm still weighing up the options of DIY or paying a garage. My nearest Volvo indie is about 10 miles away so it's not easy for me to drop-off and collect while juggling work/kids, hence it would actually be easier to do it myself at home (ignoring the hours I'll lose doing it !). I've not used this garage before (only had a Volvo for a month) but they sounded fine on the phone. They quoted about £300 inc VAT for both belt changes. That's about £100 for labour inc. VAT, so nothing too extortionate.

I'd be happier following some proper instructions though, especially with regards to engine mounts. I'd heard that the Haynes manual wasn't particularly helpful for a mk3 V70 D5.

Apparently the D5 timing belt kit is the same for mk2 and mk3 V70s....so I now have genuine Volvo timing & aux belt kits on their way to me via Royal Mail

And I've ordered a V70 2007 - 2011 Haynes manual.....I'm not raising my expectations too much with that, but it'll be better than nothing

I replaced the timing belt on my P3 V70 D5 earlier this year.
First ever timing belt job so I was a newbie going into this.
I wrote a bit about it here:
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...=252457&page=3

you will indeed need to remove the engine mount to the upper left of the engine.
Put a trolley jack under the engine though as you'll need to raise and lower the engine slightly to provide access to the various pulleys etc.

The haynes manual helped a bit, I don't think I kept the copy of the printout procedure I got from a grage (although this was less help than the Haynes manual).

I'd hoped to do a step-by-step guide to the job but as with a lot of these things, as time got on I needed to focus on the job more than taking photos.

It's not the hardest job in the world, the new belt was a pain to fit on (a lot tighter than I thought it would be). But I imagine if you've done a few before on other cars you'll have no trouble!
