Used 2017/18 XC90 with/without Adblue

Hi all,

I live in an area which is included in the enlarged 2021 London ULEZ area. Unfortunately, this means parting with our 2012 XC90 D5 for a cleaner car. I've really enjoyed the XC90 and wouldn't want anything else but another one!

I've found a 2017 D5 XC90 R-design Pro. Figures state 149g/km without Adblue. The 2018 models with Adblue have figures of 162g/km. I'm very confused!

Could anyone please offer some advice which model would be better for living within the ULEZ area? I'd love the hybrid but unfortunately out of budget.

The ad blue version is probably certified to the Euro 6d temp standard and the non ad blue to one of the earlier revisions.

All of them are E6 and fine for ULEZ and given the complexities I can't imagine they will ever penalise based on the different revisions within E6 but the ones with ad blue are probably more future proof in that respect.

I have a 2017 model without Adblue and I was initially very surprised that it did not have it. As for the CO2 figures, while they are the official figures, I would take the lower figure for the non-adblue car [like mine] with a pinch of salt. Remember also that later cars vary depending on the tyres fitted while earlier ones didn't distinguish as far as I am aware.

I am still doubtful about my car's ability to pass all relevant initial compulsory tests. The reason being that there is quite a lot of soot evident on the exhaust pipe and on the chrome surround, in contrast to the 2014 Qashqai and a 2015 Honda CRV and a 2013 Ford Ranger pickup, which all have spotless exhaust outlets. In fact the internal pipework of both Qashqai and Honda are apparently as clean as they day they were built inside the pipes. I know this because I have looked up them with a torch and I can see into the silencer of the Honda and its absolutely super-clean-looking. They have all covered between 10,000 and 20,000 more miles than the Volvo, driven on shorter journeys on average.

I was really surprised (and disappointed) at the amount of soot on the exhaust tips. So much so, I asked the dealership about it but they said it was normal.

It did make me wonder whether the car might fail an MOT in the future because of it.

Hmmmm, my V90 after 18,000 miles has zero soot in the pipes, its not the Adblue version.

My 2015 XC60, with the same engine only got sooty after a campaign update to the engine control system in 2017, it was clean before that.
