Default Charging Fault!

Well my money pit came up with a charging fault this morning.
I had to keep pulling in and pouring liquid (coca cola) over the alternator.
What numpty designer ever thought that placing the fuel filter assembly over the top of an alternator that has overheating problems?more expense!!!!

Coca-cola is a great coolant! Worked a treat on my freinds VW that shorted out and set on fire!

| have seen so many stories of these engine catching fire because of alternator failure.
What a stupid design.
My 26 year old 960 came to my rescue.
Old Tech is better... well almost as the fuel consumption is not really bearable.

Do you have the little metal heat shield fitted under the fuel filter?

Yes I think the shield is there.
But the heat coming of the alternator was unreal.

Default Alternator fire 2010 v50 2.0 d

Just a warning to be very carefull if you have alternator problems.
I knew I had a problem and had bought a new alternator and belt. Was driving relatively slowly to my mechanic and had done about 8 miles. The alternator caught fire, luckily (or not) was able to get it out before it got too serious. Insurance job cost around £1200+ vat + cost of alternator/belt.
I had a warning in red on the dash which said something like power system service urgent.
