V40 replacement on the way

Numerous reports are coming out from a slip up from Hakan Samuelsson on the Financial Times Future of Car Summit, suggest that Volvo is researching a replacement for the V40 on a form of a pseudo-SUV smaller than the XC40.
Will this make sense in their current line-up?

From what I've read and to my understanding, they are talking about a potential additional platform below the 40 series to build smaller cars, maybe a 20 series with rivals to the Audi A1 etc. Further development of the 40 series, with sister cars like a saloon and a hatch to the XC40 (on the CMA - Compact Modular Architecture platform) I was assuming is more of a given, in the same way the S90 and V90 came after the XC90, the V60 and S60 after the XC60 etc..

there was talk of an xc20 yonks ago https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...-rival-audi-q2. seems to me that not having a smaller option in their line is a bit odd, especially as the old v40 shifted so many units. Not having such an option, beyond the 'useless for us' all electric Polestar 2, means that when my wife's current v40 comes to the end of its useful life will have no option but to move bm/merc
