Default Diesels fitted with PDF

Looking for help in purchasing volvo salon or estate for my neighbour. He fancies diesel 2 litre, possibly slightly bigger but is concerned about the DPF that are now fitted to all NEW vehicles. Can anyone tell me when these filters were fitted for the UK market. He is quite happy to buy a vehicle a few years old to avoid this filter problem as the car would be in daily use and long runs not envisaged except when towing his caravan. Any help would be appreciated.

He needs to look at cars around 12yrs old or older. DPFs appeared around 1996 to 2006 depending on brand and model

As far as I know, 2009 was the cutoff for not having a DPF, at least by EU law - there may be a few late-registered vehicles without them, like my 10 plate van for example, and obviously, some vehicles had them earlier than 2009. Frankly if he just drives it like a normal person instead of cruising along at an engine-shaking 1100rpm and changing gear at 2000rpm, he should be just fine. Thrashing a diesel doesn't use a huge amount more fuel anyway.

If you really wanted to guarantee not having a DPF, find a 163bhp D5 from the early 2000's - they're about bomb-proof from what I'm told by their owners.

Diesel cars are mainly aimed at users doing high motorway miles. Maybe your friend is better off with a petrol engine instead?

Some new petrol cars also have a GPF/PPF filter too however.

EU law has never mandated DPFs, it mandated pollutant limits that manufacturers have mostly met by fitting DPFs. There are some diesel cars much later than 2009 which didn't have DPFs.

That likely explains why my van gets away without one, then. I had just assumed it was a late-registered model.
