I'm not 100% sure but I'd bet that all the Tdi engines (850s 96-97, S/V70s 97-00 and other models with the D5252T engine all use the same pump. Has your pump seized or something?

No it has low pressure and will start after a couple of minutes but will only tick over no power and smokes like a steam engine if you press the accelerator.
I have checked the Maf and ecu and all the sensors, so all points to the pump also the code said pump although I cannot replicate the code. |

It seems the most common reason for non start on these engines is poor timing.
If you've had the belts off then if you didn't lock the pump with the little locking tab, you're likely to have problems re-starting. I had problems myself even after being most careful about marking up the sprockets, locking the pump, keeping the engine at tdc etc. In the end I experimented by moving the pump belt one tooth - and thankfully it started! I then bought Ilexa Volfcr to do the timing and discovered it was so far out that I had to remove the pump belt again to get the adjustment. Now it's adjusted properly it starts first time every time and is running fine with no smoke even with 195k mileage.

No I havent had the belts off and the tensioner is set correctly
as far as I can see the pulley keyway is ok, would it tick over if the timming was out? |

Conclusion,
Is after dismantling the diesel pump slightly, removing the shut off valve I noticed the Diesel in it looked a little thin and was infact unleaded. So having thanked my son for filling his car up with unleaded instead of Diesel we removed the tank and lines and flushed it all away reassembled the pump and after several attempts to bleed the system it eventually fired up and is behaving itself. Thanks John |

Well done - and thanks for telling us - it's always nice to hear the end of the story!
Could have been really expensive - new pump and still not starting! Kids, eh! They come to you for two things; money and advice - but they never take the advice! Cheers, Keith

Hi!
I'm doing an engine rebuild on my D5252t, and have a few spare pipes and stuff... could anyone send som photo's of there engines mounted in theire cars? especially around the diesel pump, and around the alternator belt, the tensioner on the alternatior belt. there seems to be some kind of bracket holding the tensioner including the tensioner. all help appriciated thxs. |
