Rumbling that I can't put my finger on
Hey everyone, Hopefully you guys can help.
The car has developed a fault. From 20mph and above I get a rumbling from the front, it gets louder when turning right and goes quieter when turning left. I initially thought tires as it had some cheap worn tires on there when I bought the car in November. Fitted a pair of Goodyears and had the tracking and balancing done a few weeks back but the noise was still there. Next thing I thought was wheel bearing. Today I've had new disks and pads on the front (unrelated) and both front wheel bearings changed, and again the tracking and balancing done.....the noise is still there!!! The garage have had a look after changing everything and said on the face of it everything underneath seems tight and in good condition. Any ideas what could be causing this as I want to try and exhaust all of the "cheaper" fixes before i start replacing more expensive parts. Could this be a driveshaft? Or a worn hub? Or something cheap and easy that i haven't considered? It's a 2008 v50 2.0d. Thanks in advance, Craig |

Sounds like you have tackled most of the common causes, I too have a rumbling sound on mine from the N/S front, though its more noticeable higher speed. No vibrations in the cabin though (I did have, and that was the front discs, which I replaced).
When my O/S drive shaft went, it was more noticeable because I had lots of vibrations, not sure if the sound might just be its on its way out though? Have you checked for play / boot condition on the driveshaft? I have also got wider wheels / tyres on the car now, and I feel like road noise is lots louder.

Could be a front wheel bearing hub.

I have the exact same issue on mine, it is noticeably from the nearside front and when turning right. I have a C70 with Powershift box. What box is in yours out of interest??
I am going to change all my shocks and top mounts soon and have a good look to see if I can identify the cause of the noise. A part of me is wondering if the top mount bearing has worn sufficiently that it is causing a rumble when that shock is loaded (nearside shock). Incidentally I have changed discs and pads all round and the wishbone on the nearside front too. I will update here if and when I solve it. I would appreciate if you would too.

Not sure if it could be gearbox related on manual.
