Default V40 D4 2015 engine check light

The engine check light has come on, to add to the coolant hose leak.

It's going in for the coolant leak on Wednesday, and that's going to be over 700 quid in labour alone.

I'm seeing reports that the engine check light means the egr valve could need replacing at around 1600 quid.

Really? Christ, what have I got on my hands???

How on earth can the labour alone for the coolant problem take 6-7 hours labour at Dealer prices, or 10-12 hours at a local garage? Do they plan to take the engine out!

Assuming you take the engine management problem to a Volvo dealer, there is plenty of evidence on this forum that Volvo UK will pay at least a good chunk of the cost of fixing the egr problem on a 7 year old car, especially but not necessarily if it has a Volvo service history. It seems that gentle but firm persistence works if you ask the dealer to contact Volvo UK if they don't offer first, or you can contact them yourself. Most of the threads where owners have paid themselves, often unaware that Volvo might contribute, talk of £6-800. It's not a long job, and even those prices are steep. Also it may be something completely different triggering the alert.

Presumably the egr cooling system fix was done under the free of charge Recall.

The cooling hose problem WILL involve taking a large part of the engine out. Apparently both turbos have to be shifted, as well as a bunch of other stuff.

This is at Sheffield & Meredith, the independent Volvo people in Leicester, who have been reliable and reasonably priced about everything else.

I had no idea that the egr problem could get a contribution from Volvo. I'll search those threads out. (Although it doesn't have a Volvo service history, it does have a complete one.)

In the meantime, is it ok to drive the car or ill that make things worse? It's not misfiring or anything, and appears to be running perfectly smoothly.

Since I spotted the light, though, I've been using the other vehicle in the household thus far.

So it turns out it wasn't the egr at all.

Apparently, there were two codes - one was for the oil level and one was for the water pump.

He said he's never had to replace a water pump before. So he's reset the codes, because he thinks it might have been something to do with the coolant hose. That's been replaced now, so if the check light doesn't come back on then it's nothing to worry about, but if it does, then it may need replacing.

And the only way to get a replacement is from Sweden.

Oh.

So I'm currently praying the codes don't come back on when he restarts the engine tomorrow.
