Default SH S40 S60 reliability

I am looking to buy at the min and looking to get a comfy reliable car.

something that caught my eye in the carpark yesterday was Volvos specifically S40 V40 and S60

volvos are comfy per youtube reviews, but Im going to ask what is reliability like ? Ill be buying at 70k and keeping it until there is 250-300k on the clock, probably buying at 3years old and keeping until 15years old

driven on a mix of rural and motorways, don't want something that will have all the redlights on in the dash after 10years as its then you really begin to get the value from the car

They will run forever if you maintain them properly, particularly the S60 (assuming it's a 2001 - 2007 model), but they hide neglect well until they become absolutely shagged out. They aren't the cheapest thing to look after properly, but also they are less likely to totally **** the bed mechanically after 10 years, like the products of VAG seem inclined to do.

They also do not rust unless badly repaired or parked near the sea.

At this point as many issues will be age as much as mileage related. If you want to run it forever I'd skip the Ford platform S40.

ETA - if you're looking at three years old you are looking at an S60 based on the Ford EUCD platform. A lot of Ford parts in these and the S40/V50 family, you tend to see that FoMoCo logo on every annoying little part that fails. They are not as stone axe reliable as Volvos of old, but if you get one with a 5 cylinder engine they are still mechanically robust. Same rule applies to the S40, get one with a 5 pot engine. It's not the Ford/PSA engines themselves that are particularly troublesome, rather the engine ancillaries seem to be a bit flimsy. Not enough time has passed to know how reliable the new VEA engines are.
