i,ve had those tyres before and have had them miss shaped themselves, so dont use them anymore, might pay you to jack each wheel up and spin them and check they,re round m8

Had a similar problem in the past and initially thought I had a wheel bearing on the way out. Different road surfaces changed the noise. When I jacked the car up and checked for bearing play/noise, all seemed fine. Spinning the wheel highlighted that the tyre had somehow lost its roundness, by that I mean it was slightly oval. New tyre fitted and no more noise!

check you do not have worn bushes (although i am sure you would hear there more!) i am pretty certain it is the camber at the rear which has caused the shape of the rears to be slightly different, it is difficult to picture though you can sort of see it here...

the rear is not adjustable though, i know they increased the levels for the tolerance of rear camber.

Pirelli are quite a noisy tyre due to there strong sidewalls.

Due to their sidewall construction it's very rare for a Pirelli to misshape.

The noise may have always been present and is just more pronounced now you have swapped around, or its as Ninja has already said.

Thanks to all for their help so far, update is that I have wacked the tyre pressures up to 38 on the front 36 rears and the rumble is still their handling seems better for it though shame the tyres have developed this problem as they are only half worn and it seems a waste to skip them just yet.

I will see if it calms down and when I am ready to replace the tyres Pirelli will not be on the shopping list. I am thinking 225 40 18 Continental next time, all my old cars Focus ST170 3 Door ST170 Estate and Escort RS2000 and my wife’s last two cars always had Continental and we never had a single problem with them.

Quick update.

Well I left work a bit early today and went to visit the local ATS, low and behold they checked the car over and showed me that the tyre / wheel that was originally fitted to the passenger rear has stepped on the inside quite badly, oddly the one from the other side has not done this though.

My dilemma is this as much as the fitters would love me to change the tyre there is still a good 10K of life left in the tyre, now is it safe to keep this tyre or should I be changing it as soon as possible.

On the upside ATS have quoted me £524.96 to change all 4 tyres for 225 40 18 Michelin Pro Sport 3’s of which I will get another £50 back in Sainsburys Fuel vouchers. I have had a look around and this is very cheap for these tyres even E-tyres would like £148 per tyre compared to £118 at ATS.

Does anyone know how much Volvo charge for recalibrating the speedo for new a new tyre size.

Cheers

Is that fitted price @ ATS? and make sure they do not damage your wheels it really is not worth a bargain if they damage your wheels!

edit: i can beat it by using lovetyres.com (heard some good reports) and basing it on my refurbers refitting price 440 for the tyres, and with fitting around 490...but you would have to find someone to fit them for a reasonable sum..

judging from your last statement be careful Re insurers, from memory there should be no readjustment...

Try Camskill I just got some replacement tyres for the girlfirends C30 (205/55 R16) for about £53 delivered each for Toyo T1R I used these on my previous T4's and found them to be good tyres and very grippy, not the longest lasting by all account but I only had them on the T4's for about 6months before I sold the cars and foudn wear to be normal. ATS/KwikFit/National wanted more than that for their 'budget' tyres and the local indy tyre place charges £7.50 to fit and balance a wheel, even with that they were still cheaper than the budget alternatives ....

You should check out a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's - everyone seems to be raving about them and they came tops in an Autoexpress tyre test recently.
