Default 1998 V70 Tdi loud engine

hi guys, my i purchased my v70 today and noticed on the way home that the engine seems to be a bit noisy.

under load when she gets to around 2,500-3,00rpm there is a loudish knocking / clanking noise and then as the revs drop the noise goes, it is making this noise at a stand still if i rev it.

my xsara and my c5 both did this but not as loud.

any ideas what it could be.

thanks David

Possibly the vacuum pump for the brake servo? it's driven from the camshaft and can get a bit clattery as it gets older

This would certainly be a feature of the 900 model, was not aware that it shared the characteristic with the ?renault. Mine certainly does it and it can be loud, but inconstant. Other than finding a member or mechanic familiar with the engine the only way of finding out would be to source a spare or refurbished one.
