Maybe I'm a bit of a saddo but what is the point of an automatic GLT? Those gearboxes are sluggish, a power-drain and useless for towing (if that's your thing). I know - I ran an auto 240GLT estate until I found the manual one I have now, and would never get another auto - and I'm by no means sporting. So thirsty too.
Agree good GLTs are beginning to appreciate but not auto's, and if you don't need the GLTs performance gain why not settle for a GL (unless you must have leather seats). P |

We're all different, I personally would sooner have an auto I too have had both and never noticed this power drain you talk about, manual suits some auto suits some others have no preference.
In.this case the op is asking the question related to a GLT auto not a GL or a manual

If it's an extremely nice car but you do want a manual it's not a huge job to convert auto to man. Did it last year on a 240 pick-up purchased under the influence of cider...
Doner car was a rusted out GLT so we used the engine too.

Shortly before my Dad died I was looking for a Volvo estate and he said buy an automatic as less lightly to of been ragged. A few months after he died, my Sister found an estate being sold locally to her for £350 and I flew over from France and there it was a 240GLT estate. My Sister didn't know if it was a 240 or 740! By chance it was an automatic. I really like the auto. Such effortless cruising and still goes well with the kickdown.

I've just picked up a auto glt and on the 200 mile drive home it was a true pleasure the prev owner had the box rebuilt 6k ago and it was as smooth if not smoother that our v70 autos I'm using the car for a 16v conversion but we were so happy with the auto were putting it into our other Glt you won't be disappointed

I've had 2 240 autos, and although I was sceptical at first, I've been happy with them: they are reliable, long-lasting if you keep fluid in them, and change up and down when you expect. I live on a very steep hill, and the auto means no difficult hill starts. If my AW70 auto ever gives up the ghost I will replace it with the newer AW71L -- which is reputed to be nice and 'tight' to drive.
