V40 (1.8GDI) low idle and screeching fanbelt
2 issues,
The idle speed is slightly too low, idles at under 500 revs. Fine when warm but cuts out when cold. Is there an idle speed adjustment or anything else to look at? And secondly, the fan belt screeches when the engine is first run, fine when it warms up. Had a quick look at it and it is a bit loose, whats the method to tighten it? It looked a bit different to my other cars where I just loosened the alternator and pulled it to get the tensions. thanks, Mike |

There are 2 belts + the Cam belt on the GDi the one at the front for the power steering and Air con, Tucked behind this at the back is the alternator belt. The power steering belt had started to slip and then suddenly lost power steering. I just tightened the bolt at the front, and as soon as I could took it to a garage to get it checked and the belt all aligned.
As for the low idle it may need the throttle body cleaned it needs to be cleaned regularly during the services.

Somebody mentioned cleaning the idle control valve. Has anyone got a picture of where this is on the GDi?
I found a website showing how to remove it but it didn't look anything my engine bay and I am used to simpler, 1970s mechanics! Any pictures of this and the tensioner so I can understand where they are would be really appeciated! Mike |

take it for a thrash up the motorway in a lower gear than normal to keep the revs up. Sometimes this burns off the crud.
Take a look at other GDi posts and don't panic |
